ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) has been providing education, research and training since its establishment as the 15th public university in Malaysia. The education and training at this university is a continuous effort to lead in market-oriented academic programmes which are student-focused through experiential learning to produce well-trained human resource and professionals who will form the necessary catalysts for sustainable development.

UTHM offers a wide range of disciplines in education comprising Engineering and Technology, Technical and Vocational Education, Technology Management, ICT and others. Currently, the University has six faculties and fi ve centres with an enrolment of approximately 7,500 students pursuing tertiary education at the diploma, bachelor, master’s and doctorate levels. The campus is located in Batu Pahat. Johor, about 250 km south of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia The University aims for the highest quality in its science and technology academic programmes. Its MS ISO 9001:2000 recognition has become a vital source in enabling the University to maintain its quality standard and offering only quality and excellence to its customers and stakeholders.

The history of UTHM goes a long way back to 1993. The University began its early operation as a Polytechnic Staff Training Centre and later became Institut Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn in 1996, which was named after the late Tun Hussein Onn, the third Prime Minister of Malaysia. The institute was upgraded to university college, i.e. Kolej Universlti Teknologl Tun Hussein Onn in 2000 and then to Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia in 2007.

FACULTIES & CENTRES

There are six faculties and five centres in the university.

The six faculties are:

  • Faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

UTHM offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes comprising bachelor degrees, master’s and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the following areas:

  • Civil Engineering: Environmental, Water Resources, Structural and Materials, Woods, Geotechnics, Transportation, Building, Construction;
  • Electrical Engineering: Telecommunication, System Automation and Robotics, Mechatronics, Electronic Communication;
  • Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing and Production;
  • Technology Management: Management Science, Production and Operation, Construction: Real Estate Management: Facilities Management;
  • Technical and Vocational Education;
  • Information Technology and Multimedia.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE (RESEARCH-FOCUSED CENTRE)

The University has nine Excellence Centres to support research activities in the various disciplines:

  • Advanced Centre for Technical and Vocational Education (ACTiVE)
  • Advanced Training Centre for Textile Technology (ADTEC)
  • Centre for Environment, Construction & Transportation Studies (CECTUS)
  • Centre of Excellence for Facilities Management (CEFM)
  • Centre for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

  • Wireless & Radio Science Centre (WARAS)

The centre provides graduate students with conducive computer laboratories with free internet access and printing services for study purposes. Also, the University provides comprehensive library services, including state-of–the-art electronic information services for access to major Malaysian and international collections of research journals.

CENTRE FOR GRADUATE STUDIES

The Centre for Graduate Studies is responsible for monitoring the implementation of graduate programmes at UTHM. Established in 1999, the centre was first set up to train instructors and academic staff for polytechnics throughout Malaysia. Currently, the programmes are not only open to polytechnic staff but to those who are interested and fulfill the admission requirements as stated.

Postgraduate Programmes

The following postgraduate degrees are offered full-time and parttime.

  • Doctor of Philosophy
  • Master’s degree by research
  • Master’s degree by coursework

Doctor of Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy degree is a research degree by thesis under the supervision of experienced members of academic staff or a supervisory panel. A panel is made up of a graduate staff and experts from the University or those of other selected universities. The minimum duration of study is 3 years (full-time) and 4 years (part–time).

The progress of a research student is evaluated through a progress report by the supervisor every semester. An annual assessment is done through the thesis prepared by the student and viva voce examination. Students who have satisfied the Examination Committee for Postgraduate Studies in all aspects of their work are eligible for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Master’s Degree by Research
The master’s degree by research is under the supervision of experienced members of academic staff or a supervisory panel. A panel is made up of graduate staff and experts from the University or those of other selected universities.

The minimum duration of study is 1 ½ years (full–time) and 2 years (part–time). The progress of a research student is evaluated through a progress report by the supervisor every semester. The degree is examined through the presentation of his or her thesis and through a viva voce examination. Students who have satisfied the Examination Committee for Postgraduate Studies in all aspects of their work are eligible for the award of the master’s degree.

Master’s degree by Coursework
The master’s degree by coursework programme is designed to extend the knowledge and skills gained from the first degree and to develop new professional skills in graduates. The programme involves lectures, seminars and project work. A minimum of 40 credits of study and a final Cumulative Grade Point (CGPA) of at least 3.0 is required for the award of the master’s degree.

The minimum 40 credits of study comprise a combination of compulsory subjects, electives and a master’s project. Each subject carries a weightage of 2 to 3 credits, and assessments are made through take-home assignments, tests and final semester examinations. The students’ progress and performance in the master’s project is assessed through oral presentations and written reports.

Types of Registration and Course Duration

Student intakes are done twice a year i.e. June and November. Prospective students can either register for the June or November semester. The types of study modes available are:

Admission Requirements

Master’s Degree
A bachelor’s degree with honours in a related field from a recognised institution or equivalent academic qualifications that are deemed acceptable by the University Senate.

Doctor of Philosophy
A master’s degree in a related field from a recognised institution or equivalent academic qualifications that are deemed acceptable by the University Senate. A candidate with a first class degree at the undergraduate level may also be considered for admission to Ph.D programme.

Application For Admission

Research Programmes
Applications for research programmes are open throughout the year. Intakes are in July and December.

Coursework Programmes
Local applicants must submit their applications before the advertised submission deadline. International applicants are advised to submit their applications by June for the December intake and by December for the July intake of the following year.
