Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)

Background of Institution

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), established under the UTAR Education Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, was officially launched on 13 August 2002.

Guided by its vision to be a premier University for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and expertise while emphasising on the holistic development of individuals for nation building, UTAR has made impressive strides in establishing a strong reputation as a comprehensive University with dedication to achieving excellence in teaching and research.

University Vision

The vision of UTAR is to be a premier university aspiring to achieve excellence in the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and expertise emphasising nurturing and holistic development of the individual towards nation building.

University Mission

  • Be a leading university offering education of the highest standard in all significant fields aimed at fully developing the individual and better serving the nation. UTAR shall pursue a rigorous academic approach towards producing disciplined graduates critical in their thinking and dedicated to the quest of continuous learning and the pursuit of excellence.
  • Committed to the advancement of knowledge, UTAR shall collaborate with international universities, research institutions, and industries in pushing the frontiers of the humanities and embarking on scientific discoveries, medical breakthroughs, and technological innovations.
  • Dedicated to inculcating among the UTAR community high moral values, appreciation of the rich diversity in a multi-ethnic society, and an abiding concern for the betterment of all humankind.

UTAR has witnessed significant growth and expansion, be it in student enrolment, staff strength, academic portfolio or infrastructure for teaching and research since its establishment in 2002.

The University now operates four campuses (with ten faculties) with about 19,000 students pursuing over 90 programmes spread across Petaling Jaya campus, Kuala Lumpur Campus (in Setapak), Sungai Long campus and UTAR Perak Campus in Kampar, Perak.

In October 2005, UTAR received an award of recognition, the award for “Excellence in Increasing Student Enrolment (2003-2005) for Private Institutions of Higher Learning with University Status” from the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. This underlines the confidence UTAR has built in the opinion of the parents, students and employers, making it one of the preferred universities in Malaysia.

As a not-for-profit organisation without the need to focus on the bottom line, the University can channel its revenues to continuously enhance the quality of its programmes and keep them affordable for the benefit of the students.

Why choose us to study postgraduate programmes ?

Postgraduate students are valued members of the research community at UTAR and will be given every opportunity to participate fully in its research, teaching and learning activities.

UTAR has stepped up its efforts to foster innovative advancement through research and development despite the fact that it is relatively a young university.

The emphasis is also reflected in the growing number of grants received by UTAR researchers from local as well as international organisations.

The university receives external funding from the government besides its own internal fund. Whenever possible, academic staff are strongly encouraged to use these external sources to fund postgraduate students’ research. Indeed, due to the multidisciplinary nature of research problems, most of these research grants are collaborative projects with other universities and professional bodies.

Moreover, a fair number of UTAR researchers stand tall in their respective fields of research with the awards the numerous national and international accolades won by them for their works.

Furthermore, numerous research centres and many research groups have been set up to support the drive. UTAR has also established the Global Research Network (UTARGRN) to take its research to a global level. UTARGRN is a network that links up local and international academics, researchers, scientists and technologists at the forefront of research and technology development.

All this means that there will be ample opportunities for learning and research for postgraduate students of diverse interest at UTAR.

About Postgraduate Programmes

UTAR offers a wide range of programmes up to PhD level in myriad disciplines, which include business and management, information technology, science and engineering, arts and social science, and Chinese Studies.

These programmes may be completed either by coursework or research or a combination of both. Prospective students must have completed a relevant undergraduate degree with honours to be eligible for admission.

The postgraduate programmes and research in UTAR are co-coordinated by the University’s Institute of Postgraduate Studies and Research (IPSR), which serves as a central coordinating body to ensure that the postgraduate programmes are well administered, monitored and assessed to provide the best possible postgraduate experience.

Master’s degree programmes at UTAR may be completed by coursework or research or a combination of both. All UTAR doctoral programmes are research-based and they entail a specific programme of research under appropriate supervision and the submission of a PhD thesis based on the research carried out.

Minimum duration to complete a Master’s programme is between one and one and a half years for full-time students while a doctoral programme requires a minimum of two to three years of full-time study to complete. The maximum duration for the completion of postgraduate degree programmes may range from four to eight years depending on the mode and level of study.

Generally, prospective students must have completed a relevant undergraduate degree with honours to be eligible for admission to UTAR Master’s programmes and a relevant Master’s degree for admission to doctoral programmes.

Except for courses involving the study of languages other than English, all other courses in UTAR are conducted in English. Therefore, an acceptable level of proficiency in English is an additional entry requirement for postgraduate studies in disciplines other than Chinese Studies.

Why choose to study this postgraduate programme?

The programmes are aimed at providing personal enrichment to students and to enhance their employment opportunities. Postgraduate students are assured of the acquisition of advanced knowledge, competencies and expertise, both in the soft and hard skills areas within a rich and innovative learning environment at UTAR. Postgraduate students are also provided with vast opportunities to interact with the university’s research community and participate actively in research, teaching and learning activities at the university particularly at their respective faculties.

Academic & Research Strengths of the Institution

UTAR has witnessed significant growth and expansion, be it in student enrolment, staff strength, academic portfolio or infrastructure for teaching and research since its establishment in 2002. From 411 pioneering students in one campus, UTAR now has over 19,000 students spread of four campuses.

This is due to the University’s commitment in making tertiary education accessible and affordable to a wider community and in improving the quality of services and programmes continuously.

A research roadmap of UTAR has been drawn-up with clear and measurable key performance indicators (KPIs) defined and relevant benchmarks set. This is merely the beginning of the long and challenging journey that all academic and researchers in UTAR need to go through if the ultimate goal of world recognition of UTAR research activities is to be achieved. Between now and the ultimate goal are concurrent and series of research plans, activities, actions and processes that we need to define and implement strategically such that the impacts (measurable in KPIs) are maximised.

Since 2008, UTAR has set up 19 research centres to group researchers and their activities such that more cooperative and comprehensive research projects, better facility and resource utilisation, etc. can be achieved.

More research centres or clusters, especially those involving research activities of multiple disciplines, will be set up in the future as the research work in the university expands into more areas that address more local and regional problems.

Another initiative by UTAR is the establishment of the UTAR Global Research Network (UTARGRN) takes research in UTAR to a global level. UTARGRN is a network that links up academics, researchers, scientists and technologists who are at the forefront of research and technology developments, and who aspire to be at the forefront, or who are already involved or associated with the education and research activities of UTAR.

UTARGRN is envisioned to be the premier avenue for the formation of research relationship and collaboration among academics, researchers and technologists with the aim of knowledge creation and technology innovation.
