BACKGROUND OF INSTITUTION

Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) formerly known as KUKUM, the 17th public university in Malaysia, is an engineering-based university established in July 2001. The university is determined to produce engineers in the field of electronics that support Malaysia’s Industrial Plan.

Situated in the state of Perlis, UniMAP offers an exciting experience and stimulating environment for students to study here. Located in the north-western part of West Malaysia, near the Thailand border, Perlis is a lively place to stay and study. It offers a wide range of places to visit and a variety of Eastern and Western cuisine.

The UniMAP campus is virtually everywhere in Perlis, hence it is dubbed as ‘UniMAP Distributed Campus’ (UDC). To date, there are about 15 zones, each separated by public land around 1-15 km of each other. The first campus site is situated in Kubang Gajah, Perlis where laboratories and lecture theatres are located. Teaching facilities are mainly placed in Kuala Perlis, Kubang Gajah, and Jejawi. The massive vacant site of the once ‘Dragon & Phoenix’ textile manufacturing plant, located in the general area of Jejawi houses lecture rooms, laboratories and administrative offices. Chancellery offices, as well as the University Library, are located at Kangar. Some administrative offices are in Jejawi and around Kangar. Students live either in a nearby residential area at Bintong, Wang Ulu, or in several housing estates in Kuala Perlis.

UniMAP now has roughly 5000 students, and a workforce of more than 1000 people comprising academic and non-academic staff. There are eight engineering schools offering undergraduate and postgraduate academic degree programmes.

GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

By Research

UniMAP’s main postgraduate programmes are conducted by research and there are currently one PhD programme and 12 master programmes in various engineering fields.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
The PhD is an advanced degree that provides qualification for students who wish to pursue an academic or research career. The PhD programme at UniMAP is offered to candidates who possess a master’s degree in Engineering, in an area relevant to the candidate’s proposed area of research; or candidates who attained first class honours in a bachelor’s degree of Engineering from an approved university.

Master of Science (MSc)
The Master of Science is done by research without coursework. Students are required to write a research proposal which includes the title of the research project, objective of research, review of relevant scientific literature and an introduction to research methodology before performing an in depth investigation in a chosen area of research and preparing a thesis covering their methodology as well as the analysis and evaluation of their results. Students are initially closely supervised by their supervisors, but work more independently as they develop their research skills. Master’s programmes by research are offered in:

UniMAP also offers Mixed Mode programmes where 50% is by coursework and another 50% is by research. The first mixed mode programme offered is the Master of Science (Polymer Engineering). The following programmes will commence in 2009:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Doctoral Programme

  • A master’s degree in Engineering from an approved university in an area relevant to the candidate’s proposed area of research.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering with First Class Honours from an approved university.
  • Other equivalent qualifications approved by the Senate.

Master’s Programme

  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent from an approved university in an area relevant to the candidate’s area of research or study; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications approved by the Senate Application forms are available from the website http://www.unimap.edu.my. Completed forms must be submitted with two (2) copies of certified documents (degree, academic transcript, passport and other related documents) and four (4) passport-sized photographs and sent to:

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

English Placement Test
All foreign postgraduate students who do not possess an English language proficiency equivalent to TOEFL 550 or IELTS 6.0 are required to sit for the English Placement Test before commencing their studies at UniMAP.

The placement test comprises two measurements:

  • A computerised English measurement
  • A paper and pencil English test which measures the four language skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing.
