ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
The vision of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is to be an institution that generates, disseminates and applies innovative knowledge and catalyst for the development of progressive individuals and a sustainable environment.
UMT contributes towards HRD and the socio-economy of the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) specifically, and the nation in general. It is the platform for the production of k-workers and the key regional centre for higher education.
UMT emphasises on teaching, research and professional services in the fields of science, technology and management of natural resource via the generation of excellent academic and research programmes towards the development of individuals who will ensure the sustainability of the environment, community and the nation.
Since its establishment in 2002, UMT has undergone a significant transformation from a new and little-known university college to a successful public institution of higher learning offering numerous undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as making waves in research and innovation.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
UMT is very serious in improving its research and development.
The university is aiming towards becoming a renowned university
in research as a core business. UMT’s excellent research profile
attracts quality graduate students. To undertake research studies at
UMT means joining an institution with up-to-date research facilities,
publishing research activities nationally and internationally and
having numerous adequate skilled researchers in the respective
niche areas.
UMT’s campus is strategically located on the shores of the South
China Sea. The Malaysian government has approved five major areas
as UMT’s niche areas, namely, Marine Biotechnology, Mangrove
Research and Rehabilitation, Turtle Research and Rehabilitation,
Management and Biodiversity Rehabilitation, and Aquaculture,
which enable UMT to continuously focus on the areas of Science,
Technology and Natural Resource Management. In addition, UMT
is continuously upgrading its research capacity and capabilities in
other areas such as maritime studies, economics, management,
basic sciences, physical sciences, engineering, computer sciences
and mathematics.

GRADUATE SCHOOL
Graduate Studies
The Graduate School of UMT was officially established in 2002 and
has produced 95 graduates. The prime responsibility of the Graduate
School is to provide services and assistance in expanding the graduate
studies capability of the University; and. ensuring that approved
university policies and procedures in graduate studies are in place.
A diverse range of MSc and PhD graduate programmes are offered
by research as well as by coursework modes. Currently, there are
more than 38 fields of research carried out by academics from seven
research clusters and two coursework programmes.
Programmes by Research
The master’s and doctoral programmes under this structure
emphasise 100% on research and is the major requirement for
attaining the degrees. While there is no specific number of credits
required for graduation, a student may be required to enroll in some
courses to strengthen their knowledge base. They are also advised
to participate in academic discussions and seminar presentations. At
the end of the programme, they are required to produce a thesis as
a significant contribution to knowledge that demonstrates mastery in
the chosen field of research.

Programmes by Coursework (degree without thesis)
A student who is enrolled under this structure is required to fulfill
a specific number of credits comprising coursework. Thesis is not
a requirement. However, the student may be expected to submit
a project report or case study equivalent to 4-6 credits. In some
programmes, a comprehensive examination is required in lieu of the
project report/case study. The minimum requirement is 30 credits.
Two programmes are offered under this structure – Master of Science
(Aquaculture) and Master of Management (Integrated Coastal
Zone).
Master of Science (Aquaculture)
This programme is designed for the candidates who wish to extend
their knowledge and skills in aquaculture. This programme also
prepares them to become experts in the aquaculture industry.
Master of Management (Integrated Coastal Zone)
This is a special programme designed for science and social science
degree holders. This programme will equip students with knowledge
on the sciences as well as the environment, management, economics
and accounting.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR DEGREE WITH THESIS
Master’s Programmes
- Bachelor’s degree with good achievement from UMT or any other
institution of higher learning recognised by the UMT Senate; or
- Any other qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and
possess evidence of adequate research or work experience
recognised by the UMT Senate. A faculty that offers a specific
programme will determine the level of experience required.
Doctoral Programmes
- Master’s degree from UMT or any other institution of higher learning
recognised by the UMT Senate; or
- Any other qualification equivalent to a master’s degree and
evidence of adequate research or work experience recognised by
the UMT Senate; or
- Bachelor’s degree with an outstanding Cumulative Grade Point
Average (CGPA) from UMT or any institution of higher learning
recognised by the UMT Senate; or
- Currently enrolled as a master’s student at UMT, and
– has completed at least two semesters of study;
– has shown outstanding progress; and
– received recommendation from the Graduate Studies Committee
of the Faculty to transfer to a PhD programme with the Senate’s
approval.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applications are to be made on prescribed forms which may obtain
from Graduate School or downloaded from the internet http://gs.umt.edu.my. A complete application should consist of:
- A complete, signed application form
- Certified copy of IC (for Malaysians and Permanent Residents)
- Certified copy of degree certificate
- Certified copy of transcript
- A report of project proposal (for Research structure only)
- Reports of two academic referees (must be sealed)
- Documentary evidence of the applicant’s ability to cover all related
expenses during programme period such as bank guarantee or
sponsorship letter (international students only)
- Application fee of RM25 (local application) or USD25 (international
application) which should be in the form of a bank draft/postal
order / money order form, payable to Bendahari Universiti Malaysia
Terengganu
- Evidence of English proficiency (if any)
- Other relevant documents (if any)
