Institution Profile

Universiti Malaya (UM)

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

University of Malaya (UM) was established on 8 October 1949 as a national institution of higher education to meet the needs of the Federation of Malaya and Singapore.

As the first tertiary education establishment in Malaysia, UM was modelled after the universities of the world with the concept of universality. UMís strength has been its broad range of disciplines from Arts to the Sciences which evolved over the decades. It takes pride in having produced many of the countryís prominent leaders. As it celebrated its centenary in 2005, affiliation with the UM name is now even more sought after by many would-be degree candidates, not only from Malaysia but also from other countries in the region.

In the highly competitive world of today, an important criterion for academic superiority is postgraduate training that features trans-discipline cutting-edge research and high quality programmes. UMís 21 faculties, academies, centres and institutes offer more than 100 masterís and doctoral programmes run by distinguished academicians who excel in their respective fields.

Admissions to most masterís degree programmes require a bachelorís degree in related fields. However, admissions to the Master of Business Administration, Master of Criminal Justice and Master of Information Technology are open to candidates with various academic backgrounds.

The Institute of Graduate Studies (IGS) is the graduate centre for UM. Since its inception in 1979, IGS has inspired to promote excellent multidisciplinary research and postgraduate training in order to meet the growing demands and development of the modern era. The number of postgraduate students has increased significantly over the years. There are currently over 9,000 students with about 2,500 international students from 80 countries.
