Background of Institution

Heriot-Watt University was established in the UK back in 1820. Its main campus is situated in the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, and it has two other branch campuses at the Scottish border and Orkney. Heriot-Watt also has two international campuses: in Dubai and in Putrajaya, Malaysia.

Heriot-Watt first came to Malaysia in 2012 and welcomed its first batch of students in September 2014. The campus launch was held in February 2015.

1821: Establishment of the School of Arts Edinburgh, the world’s first Mechanics Institute

1852: Name was changed to Watt Institution & School of Arts

1855: Name was changed to Heriot-Watt College

1966: Recognised as Heriot-Watt University by Royal Charter

2005: Establishment of first international campus in Dubai

2012: First came to Malaysia and operated out of a temporary campus in Menara PjH, Putrajaya

2014: Heriot-Watt University Malaysia welcomed its first batch of Foundation students in September

2015: Official launching of the campus in Putrajaya, Malaysia, was held on February 12

Academic Strengths

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia offers courses in several fields, for instance, engineering, business, built environment and actuarial science, among others. 

A mixed mode of teaching and assessments is practised in delivering course content. This includes assignments, tutorials, group projects, mentoring sessions and laboratory sessions, to name a few. This provides students with a more hands-on approach to the course content and allows them to put into practice what they have learnt.

The current programme offering at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia includes foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. At the foundation level, there are two programmes offered: Foundation in Science and Foundation in Business and Design. At the undergraduate and postgraduate level, there are various programmes offered in varying fields, for instance, Engineering (Petroleum, Civil, Chemical, Mechanical), Built Environment (Construction Project Management and Quantity Surveying) as well as Business (Business Psychology, MBA, Business and Finance).

Heriot-Watt’s campuses in the UK and Dubai provide students the option to transfer campuses during their undergraduate studies.

These courses have all been adapted from the syllabus used at Heriot-Watt’s UK campuses to suit the Malaysian context, providing students access to a top-notch British education without them having to leave the country.

 Additionally, the university works with professionals in the industry in developing and accrediting the curriculum. This practice ensures that the course content and learning materials used are up-to-date and relevant to industry requirements. This practice has ensured that Heriot-Watt graduates are industry ready upon completion of their studies.

Academic Facilities & Resources

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is located in the beautiful garden city of Putrajaya, which plays host to many events, including the International Fireworks Competition, International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta and Red Bull Air Race World Championship, among others. Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s Putrajaya campus is built on a 4.8-acre site on a picturesque lakeside location and incorporates many green features, the most distinctive of which is its “living green roof”. This campus currently has a student capacity of 4000, and is expected to be able to hold 6000 students once it has been fully-developed.

This campus was designed with the modern student in mind. Student meeting rooms and student common rooms are made available to students, giving them the opportunity to relax and socialise. The university’s two-storey library was also designed to cater to different student preferences. For instance, there are quiet study rooms for individual study, while group study and discussion areas are also made available for collaborative learning. The 365 room is provided for students who may have to study late on campus. This room is CCTV monitored and equipped with basic kitchen facilities.

Overlooking the lake and promenade are the university’s cafeterias, which provide students with many meal options. A bakery, coffee shop, bookshop, convenience store and other retail outlets are in the works as the campus is being continuously developed.

Student Support Services & Student Development Activities for Graduate Employability

The university’s student services staff provides guidance on a range of academic matters to ensure that students receive the right information. Responsibilities include administrative services, student records, examinations, enrolments, timetables and fee collections, to name a few.

There is also in place a student services centre for international students, the International Student Support Office (ISSO). ISSO assists international students in the various areas, from their student visa application to their arrival at the university.

Other services in place for students include counselling services, information services (pertaining to IT and library issues), career advisory services as well as recruitment and admissions.

Outline of Scholarships/Financial Aid

Scholarships offered at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia include those awarded by the university, as well as sponsored scholarships, which are offered by corporate entities for selected programmes through their scholarship schemes. These organisations include Shell Malaysia, Loh & Loh Corporation, and Great Eastern Life, to name a few.

Heriot-Watt University scholarships include the High Achiever Scholarship (HAS), Financial Hardship Scholarship as well as the university’s Inaugural Undergraduate Scholarship. The HAS is awarded to students based on the results of their previous level of study. These results determine the discount they receive on their fees. HAS is offered at the foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Financial Hardship scholarship is awarded to students with excellent academic results who demonstrate financial hardship. This scholarship, too, is offered at all three levels. The Inaugural Undergraduate Scholarship is offered to all student of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia who meet the entry requirements. Recipients of this scholarship will enjoy RM2,000 off their fees each year.

There are also in place several financial discounts. These include the Heriot-Watt Alumni Discount and the Family Discount. The former is available only for postgraduate studies, where a 10% discount is granted to an alumnus of Heriot-Watt University who registers for postgraduate studies at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. The Family Discount is available at the foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate level, and is a discount of 10% granted to children and/or spouse of a Heriot-Watt alumnus who register for a programme of study at the university.

Recognition & Achievement

  • Ranked 25th in the world by Times Higher Education “Table of Tables”
  • Ranked 13th in the UK, 2nd in Scotland and top in the UK for Chemistry and Civil Engineering, and placed in the top ten in the UK for Accounting & Finance, Building and Town & Country Planning, Business, Management & Marketing, Physics, Chemical Engineering and Mathematics
  • At least 90% of students were satisfied overall with their course in 11 of 17 subject areas (including Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Accounting, etc.) and 82% of students on average said they were satisfied with their overall experience at Heriot-Watt, placing it third in Scotland and 39th in the UK out of 124 institutions according to the National Student Survey
  • Ranked 352nd in the world and 40th in the UK, placing it in the top 4% of universities globally according to QS World’s Top Universities
