Introduction To The Course
The Master in Business Administration (MBA) course is a 12 unit postgraduate programme offered by HELP University College (HELP) through its learning center, HELP Graduate School (HGS). The MBA course comprises subjects carefully chosen from a combination of management disciplines with options for emphasis in global business, finance and marketing subjects. To graduate, students enrolled are required to satisfactorily complete 12 study units, comprising:

  • 8 units; and
  • 4 elective units chosen from global business, management, finance or marketing subjects.

The course is designed to meet the needs of students through 56 contact hours per subject.

Aims Of The Course
The philosophical thrust of the HELP MBA is inspired by the thinking of Henry Mintzberg (see “Managers, Not MBAs? Berrett-Koehler Publishers Inc., 1st edition, 2004) and the revamping of the London Business School regarding the purpose, paradigms, principles and practices of MBA courses. Briefl y, the focused outcome of the HUC programme is to have graduates who have developed the selfrefl ective mindset, the analytic mindset, the collaborative mindset, the worldly mindset and the action mindset.

The objectives of the MBA course are aimed at:

  • Creating the skills and abilities required to provide strong leadership and management in a complex global and changing business environment by providing students with an understanding of the management disciplines of accounting & finance, marketing and managing people. Elective subjects can further extend this knowledge base to accommodate student interest and vocational needs.
  • Offering opportunities to explore modern aspects of Business Administration not previously encountered and to broaden aspects that were covered in previous studies
  • Developing a keen appreciation of some key theoretical concepts, major economic themes and significant current issues surrounding Business Administration
  • Providing opportunities for a practical appreciation and application of the Business Administration perspective for businesses in the Asian region
  • Developing an awareness of the professional context in which graduates with Business Administration credentials may find employment
  • Assisting students to further develop personal skills in critical thinking, research, bibliography, analysis, verbal argument and professional writing

Graduates from the MBA course should be able to:

  • Acknowledge the broad dimensions and content of the different academic fields of Business Administration
  • Understand the key theoretical concepts and significant current issues within Business Administration
  • Critically read, analyse and apply the academic and professional knowledge in Business Administration
  • Prepare themselves for more advanced studies through the Doctor of Business Administration
  • Apply their enhanced skills in academic research, verbal argument and professional writing
  • Progress their career from executive positions to middle and senior level managerial posts in both the private and public sectors.

Admission Regulations
Intake Policy The HGS Director upon the recommendation of the HGS Course Coordinator may admit students who satisfy the admission criteria into the MBA course.

Intake Periods
Student intake commences in March, July and November.

Application for Admission
Applications for admission must be made on the HGS admission application form. Applicants are required to sign the declaration on the application form certifying that the information provided on the form or attached to the form or subsequently provided in support of their application, is deemed to be true and correct.

Admission Requirements

  • An approved bachelor degree or an equivalent academic or professional qualification with minimum 3 years work experience
  • An English proficiency level considered sufficient to satisfactorily complete the course.

Course Commencement, Progression And Assessment
Candidates enrolling in the MBA programme must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Prior issuance of offer letter to the candidate
  • The offer letter has been accepted by the candidate
  • Full settlement of fee(s) for the course according to schedule
  • Other condition(s) as prescribed in the HELP University College Handbook for MBA

The HGS must approve a student’s programme of study. To qualify for the MBA award, a student enrolled must complete 12 units comprising:

  • 8 subjects; and
  • 4 elective subjects chosen from global business, management, finance and marketing topics.

Please refer to Course Progression Pathway. Each unit will carry 8 credit points, requiring an overall aggregate of 96 credit points for conferral of the award of the MBA.

Course assessment
Each subject has a minimum of three assessment items:

  • A 2-hour written examination
  • Submission of 2 assignments on topics relevant to the subject

Other assessment items may be used at the discretion of the subject facilitators. These may include individual or group assignments, project writing, tests, class discussion and class participation. The HELP MBA Academic Board upon the recommendation of the subject facilitator must approve any such other assessments in a subject.

The weightage of each assessment item is based on the following percentage:

Grading scale:

High Distinction (HD) 85 - 100 marks
Distinction (DI) 75 - 84 marks
Credit (CR) 65 - 74 marks
Pass (PS) 50 - 64 marks
Fail (FL) 0 - 49 marks
